Reading the model number on a refrigerator water filter label

Wrong filter orders are the most common frustration in the refrigerator filter category. Someone searches for their brand, orders what looks right, and receives a filter that either won’t seat or won’t seal. The fix is always the same: identify the exact filter model number before ordering — not the fridge brand, not the fridge model, but the specific filter part number.

This guide gives you three methods to find your filter number in under 60 seconds, for every major refrigerator brand.

💡 The Fastest Method — Always Start Here

Open your fridge and read the label on your currently installed filter. The filter part number (e.g. LT1000P, DA29-00020B, EDR3RXD1) is printed directly on it. This is more reliable than looking up by fridge model number, because the same refrigerator series sometimes shipped with different filter generations at different production dates.

Method 1 — Read the Installed Filter Label (Best Method)

This is the single most reliable filter identification method. Here’s how to do it for each brand:

LG

LG Refrigerators

Open the fridge and look in the upper right interior corner. The LG filter is a cylindrical cartridge protruding from a round housing. Pull it out slightly if needed to read the label clearly.

📍 Upper right interior
Common LG filter numbers: LT1000P / ADQ74793501 (2018+) · LT700P / ADQ36006101 (2014–2018) · LT800P / ADQ73613401 (select models)
SAM

Samsung Refrigerators

Samsung filters are in one of two locations depending on your model. Older French door and side-by-side models (RF28, RF26, RS25): look in the upper right interior. Newer 4-Door Flex and Bespoke models: look at the bottom-left front grille at floor level.

📍 Upper right interior OR bottom-left grille
Common Samsung filter numbers: DA29-00020B / HAF-CIN (upper right, most common) · DA97-17376B / HAF-QIN (bottom grille, 4-Door Flex) · DA29-00003G / HAF-CU1 (bottom twist-in, older)
WP

Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Kenmore (106.), Amana

These brands use the EveryDrop filter platform. Open the fridge and look in the upper interior — the filter is a twist-in cartridge. The EveryDrop number (EDR1RXD1, EDR3RXD1, etc.) or older W-number (W10295370A) will be on the label.

📍 Upper interior of fridge compartment
Common EveryDrop numbers: EDR1RXD1 / Filter 1 · EDR3RXD1 / W10295370A / Filter 3 · EDR4RXD1 / UKF8001 / Filter 4 · EDR5RXD1 / Filter 5
GE

GE, GE Profile, GE Café

GE filters are located in the upper right interior of the refrigerator compartment on most models. Push the release button and the filter ejects partially. Read the label on the filter body.

📍 Upper right interior — push-button release
Common GE filter numbers: RPWFE / WR17X24193 (French Door 2014+, has RFID chip) · RPWF (French Door older, no chip) · MSWF / WR17X11608 (Side-by-Side) · XWFE / WR17X22810 (newer French Door)
FRI

Frigidaire and Electrolux

Frigidaire filters are in the upper right interior of the fridge compartment. Press the eject button and pull the filter out to read the label.

📍 Upper right interior — push-button eject
Common Frigidaire filter numbers: ULTRAWF / PureSource Ultra II / 242046801 (French Door, larger models) · PAULTRA / PureSource Ultra / 242017801 (bottom-freezer, smaller models)
KEN

Kenmore Refrigerators

For Kenmore, first identify the manufacturer using your model number prefix (106. = Whirlpool, 795. = LG, 253. = Frigidaire), then use the method for that manufacturer above. Full guide: Best Kenmore Refrigerator Water Filters.

📍 Location depends on manufacturer
Kenmore filter numbers: 46-9930 / 9081 (Whirlpool-built 106.xxxxx) · 46-9690 / 9690 (LG-built 795.xxxxx) · 46-9999 / 9999 (Frigidaire-built 253.xxxxx)

Method 2 — Use Your Refrigerator Model Number

If the installed filter label is unreadable, damaged, or the filter has already been removed, use your refrigerator’s model number to identify the correct filter.

Where to find your refrigerator model number:

  • Inside the door frame: Open the left door and look along the left or top interior edge — most brands place a sticker here
  • Behind the crisper drawers: Remove the crisper drawers and look on the back wall of the lower fridge compartment
  • On the back of the refrigerator: A sticker on the exterior rear panel — less accessible but always present
  • Inside the freezer door frame: Some brands (particularly LG) place the model sticker here

Once you have your refrigerator model number, enter it at our Filter Compatibility Checker for an instant guaranteed filter match. Our database covers 2,000+ refrigerator models across all major brands.

Method 3 — Check Your Refrigerator Manual or Manufacturer Website

Your refrigerator’s user manual (physical copy or PDF via the manufacturer’s support site) will list the correct filter part number in the Water Filter or Maintenance section. This is particularly useful for:

  • Very new refrigerators where the installed filter may not yet have a readable label
  • Refrigerators that have had the filter replaced by a previous owner using a different brand
  • Confirming the correct filter when the installed label and the model-number lookup give conflicting results
⚠️ Important Scope Note: This Guide Covers Standard Refrigerators Only

The brand-by-brand location instructions above apply to standard French door, side-by-side, and bottom-freezer refrigerators from the major brands covered (LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire, Kenmore). They do not reliably apply to built-in, column, or luxury refrigerators from brands such as Sub-Zero, Thermador, Miele, Viking, Wolf, Bosch, or Fisher & Paykel. These brands often use proprietary filter systems in non-standard locations — inside a dedicated filter housing in the ceiling of the fresh food compartment, in the door, or in an external housing on the supply line. If you own a built-in or premium refrigerator, consult the specific brand’s owner manual or support site for the exact filter location and part number. Our support team can also assist — contact us with your full model number and we will locate the right filter and location for you.

Common Filter Identification Mistakes to Avoid

Common MistakeWhy It Causes Wrong OrdersThe Right Approach
Ordering by fridge brand alone (“Samsung filter”)Samsung uses 3+ different filters across their lineup — brand name is not a filter specificationRead the installed filter label or enter fridge model number
Assuming same filter fits same model seriesLG’s LRMVS series shipped with LT700P pre-2018 and LT1000P post-2018Always verify from the filter label, not the fridge name
Ordering Whirlpool Filter 3 when fridge needs Filter 1Filter 1 and Filter 3 look identical but have different thread patternsRead the EDR number (EDR1RXD1 vs EDR3RXD1) from the installed filter
Using fridge model number from memoryMisremembered model numbers are a frequent cause of wrong filter ordersPhotograph the sticker inside the door frame for a permanent record

Pro tip: Photograph your filter label right now

Take a photo of your installed filter’s label and save it in your phone’s photos. Next time you need a replacement, you’ll have the exact part number available without opening the fridge.

Frequently Asked Questions

I cannot find a filter inside my refrigerator — where else could it be? +
Some refrigerator models have filters in non-standard locations. Samsung 4-Door Flex and Bespoke models have the filter in the bottom-left front grille at floor level — it is not inside the fridge compartment at all. Some older Whirlpool and Maytag models have the filter in the bottom front grille. Some older LG and Samsung models have a twist-in filter at the bottom rear of the fridge interior. If you cannot locate the filter, look at your refrigerator model number and search “[brand + model number] + water filter location” or contact our team for a guided identification.
What if the filter label is unreadable? +
Use Method 2 — find your refrigerator’s model number sticker inside the door frame and enter it at our Filter Compatibility Checker. If the model number is also unreadable or you cannot locate it, contact our team with the brand of your refrigerator and a photo of the filter housing — in most cases we can identify the correct filter from the housing shape and location alone.
The installed filter is a compatible brand — can I still identify the correct replacement? +
Yes — compatible filters always list the OEM part number they are replacing on the label. Look for the cross-reference section of the filter label, which will show something like “Replaces: LT1000P, ADQ74793501” or “Compatible with: DA29-00020B, HAF-CIN”. Use that OEM part number to find your replacement — any NSF-certified compatible listing that OEM number will fit your refrigerator.
Can I use my refrigerator without knowing the filter model? +
Yes — if you cannot identify your filter, you can use a bypass plug to operate the dispenser and ice maker without filtration while you identify the correct replacement. This provides unfiltered tap water, which is safe in most municipal water areas for short periods. Contact us and we can often supply a compatible bypass plug for your refrigerator model as an interim solution.
