Finding Your Filter

7 Questions

How do I find the right water filter for my refrigerator?

+

The easiest way is to use our Filter Compatibility Checker. Enter your refrigerator model number and we’ll instantly match you to the exact filter — OEM or compatible — that fits your fridge.

Your refrigerator model number is typically located on a sticker inside the fridge door frame, behind the crisper drawers, or on the back of the unit. It will look something like: LFX31925ST (LG), RF28R7351SG (Samsung), or WRS325SDHZ (Whirlpool).

💡 Tip: You can also check your current filter — many have their part number printed on the casing. Enter that directly into our search bar.

Where exactly is the model number on my LG refrigerator?

+

On LG refrigerators, the model number sticker is usually found in one of these locations:

  • Inside the fridge on the upper left or right door frame wall (most common)
  • Behind the crisper drawers on the back wall
  • On the back of the refrigerator, lower left panel

LG model numbers typically look like: LFX31925ST, LRMVS3006S, or LRFXS2503S. Once you have it, enter it into our compatibility checker for an instant match.

Where is the model number on a Samsung refrigerator?

+

Samsung places model number stickers in these locations depending on the model:

  • Inside the fridge on the right-side interior wall or ceiling panel
  • Behind the crisper drawers on the back interior wall
  • On the left door frame — look for a silver or white label

Samsung model numbers look like: RF28R7351SG, RS25J500DSR, or RF23M8070SR. Enter yours into the compatibility checker to find your filter in seconds.

Can I search by filter model number instead of the fridge model?

+

Yes — absolutely. If you already know your filter’s part number (printed on the old filter casing or in your owner’s manual), you can type it directly into the search box on our Compatibility Checker or the main search bar at the top of any page.

Common filter model numbers include: LT1000P (LG), DA29-00020B (Samsung), W10295370A (Whirlpool), RPWFE (GE), UKF8001 (Maytag).

💡 Tip: Look at the old filter before you throw it away — the part number is usually printed on the label.

What if I can’t find my model number anywhere?

+

Don’t worry — this happens more often than you’d think. Try these steps:

  • Check the back of the refrigerator — many have a label near the compressor
  • Look inside any door pockets — some fridges have the manual tucked in there with model info
  • Check your original purchase receipt or the retailer’s website order history
  • Search the brand’s website using your fridge’s serial number instead

If you still can’t find it, contact our support team and describe your fridge (brand, approximate age, style — French door, side-by-side, etc.) and where the filter is located. Our specialists can usually identify the right filter from that description alone.

Do Kenmore refrigerators use the same filters as Whirlpool or LG?

+

Yes — this is one of the most common surprises for Kenmore owners. Kenmore refrigerators are manufactured by other brands — primarily Whirlpool, LG, or Frigidaire — depending on the year and model.

This means a Kenmore 9690 filter may be identical to a Whirlpool filter, and a Kenmore 46-9980 may match an LG filter. Our compatibility checker handles all Kenmore model numbers and cross-references them automatically.

💡 Tip: The first 3 digits of a Kenmore model number often reveal the original manufacturer: 106.xxxxx = Whirlpool, 795.xxxxx = LG.

What if the compatible filter I ordered doesn’t fit?

+

We guarantee every filter we sell will fit your refrigerator when matched through our compatibility checker or product pages. If it doesn’t fit for any reason:

  • Contact us within 30 days of delivery
  • We’ll send the correct filter at no charge
  • Or issue a full refund — your choice, no questions asked

You don’t need to return the wrong filter. We’ll just make it right. That’s our Guaranteed Fit Promise.

OEM vs Compatible Filters

6 Questions

What is the difference between OEM and compatible refrigerator filters?

+

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) filters are made by or for the refrigerator brand itself — the exact same filter that came with your fridge. LG makes the LT1000P. Samsung makes the DA29-00020B. They’re premium products with premium prices — often $40–$65 per filter.

Compatible filters (also called aftermarket or replacement filters) are manufactured by third-party companies to match the exact dimensions, threading, and filtration specs of the OEM version. When they carry NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 certification, they perform identically in terms of water safety and quality.

The main practical difference is price — compatible filters cost 40–60% less. When NSF-certified, you’re getting the same clean water for significantly less money.

💡 Our Take: If it’s NSF 42 and 53 certified and fits your fridge, a compatible filter is a smart choice. We’d tell you otherwise if we thought it mattered — and sometimes the OEM is worth it. Read our full OEM vs Compatible guide for the nuanced breakdown.

Is it safe to use a compatible (non-OEM) water filter?

+

Yes — as long as the filter carries NSF/ANSI 42 and NSF/ANSI 53 certification. These are independent third-party certifications (not self-claimed) that verify the filter reduces the contaminants it claims to reduce, including chlorine, lead, cysts, and VOCs.

Every compatible filter we sell at SwapMyFilter is NSF-certified. We don’t carry uncertified filters, regardless of price or supplier claims.

What to avoid: Very cheap filters on Amazon or eBay that claim “compatible” without NSF certification numbers. These can be unsafe and are not stocked by us.

Will a compatible filter void my refrigerator warranty?

+

In most cases, no — using a compatible filter will not void your refrigerator’s warranty. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (US federal law) generally prohibits manufacturers from voiding warranties simply because you used a third-party replacement part, as long as that part doesn’t cause damage.

LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, and GE may include language in their manuals recommending OEM filters, but that language cannot legally constitute a warranty void by itself in the US.

💡 Note: If a compatible filter causes documented damage to your refrigerator (which is extremely rare with NSF-certified filters), that specific damage may not be covered. For peace of mind on new fridges under full warranty, you may prefer OEM. After the manufacturer warranty expires, compatible is the smart move.

How much money can I save with a compatible filter?

+

Significantly. Here’s a real comparison:

  • LG LT1000P OEM: ~$45 per filter | SwapMyFilter compatible: $19.95 — save $25 per swap
  • Samsung DA29-00020B OEM: ~$50 | Compatible: $17.95 — save $32 per swap
  • GE RPWFE OEM: ~$55 | Compatible: $22.95 — save $32 per swap

Filters should be replaced every 6 months. With two filters per year, you’re saving $50–$65+ per year — on one fridge. With two refrigerators, that’s $100–$130 saved every year, indefinitely.

Do compatible filters last as long as OEM filters?

+

Yes — our compatible filters are rated for 6 months or 200 gallons, matching the standard lifespan of OEM filters. The rated capacity is part of NSF certification testing, so it’s verified, not estimated.

In practice, actual lifespan depends on your local water quality. If you have hard water or high sediment, filters may exhaust slightly faster — this is true for OEM and compatible alike. If you notice taste or odor changes before 6 months, that’s your signal to swap early.

When is buying an OEM filter actually worth it?

+

We’ll be honest — there are situations where OEM makes sense:

  • New refrigerator still under full warranty and the manufacturer explicitly requires OEM filters
  • GE RPWFE filter specifically — this OEM filter contains an RFID chip required by some GE models. Compatible versions exist, but you must verify RFID compatibility for your specific model.
  • Very high-end or specialty models where the OEM filter has unique design specifications

For most standard refrigerators and most customers — compatible NSF-certified is the right call. We stock OEM options too for those who prefer them.

NSF Certification

5 Questions

What does NSF/ANSI 42 certification mean?

+

NSF/ANSI 42 is the certification standard for “aesthetic effects” — meaning it verifies a filter reduces chlorine, chloramine, taste, and odor from your water. It makes your water taste and smell better.

This is the baseline certification — necessary but not sufficient on its own for full water safety assurance. Almost all refrigerator filters carry NSF 42. It’s NSF 53 that’s the more important safety certification.

What does NSF/ANSI 53 certification mean?

+

NSF/ANSI 53 is the certification for “health effects” — it verifies a filter reduces lead, cysts (like Cryptosporidium and Giardia), VOCs (volatile organic compounds), and other potentially harmful contaminants.

This is the critical health-safety certification. Any filter you purchase for drinking water should carry NSF 53, not just NSF 42. All compatible and OEM filters sold by SwapMyFilter carry both NSF 42 and NSF 53 certification.

💡 Bottom line: NSF 42 = tastes better. NSF 53 = safer to drink. You want both — and every filter on our site has both.

How do I verify a filter is genuinely NSF certified?

+

You can verify any filter’s NSF certification directly on the NSF International website at nsf.org/consumer-resources/articles/certified-drinking-water-filters. Search by brand or product name.

On any product page at SwapMyFilter, the NSF certification number is listed so you can cross-reference it directly. If a filter’s certification number doesn’t appear in NSF’s database, don’t buy it — from us or anyone else.

What is WQA Gold Seal certification?

+

The WQA Gold Seal is a certification from the Water Quality Association — an independent, non-profit international trade association. A WQA Gold Seal means the product has been tested and verified to perform as claimed according to industry standards.

It’s a secondary verification that complements NSF certification. While NSF 42 and 53 are the primary standards you should look for, WQA Gold Seal adds an extra layer of verified confidence. Some of our filters carry all three certifications.

Does NSF certification mean the filter removes bacteria?

+

Not automatically — it depends on the specific certifications held. NSF 42 and 53 do not certify bacteria removal. Standard refrigerator carbon block filters reduce cysts (Cryptosporidium, Giardia) under NSF 53, but cysts are technically parasites, not bacteria.

For bacteria removal, you’d need a filter certified under NSF/ANSI 58 (reverse osmosis systems) or NSF/ANSI 55 (UV systems) — these are separate systems, not refrigerator water filters.

If you have municipal tap water in the US, bacteria is treated at the water plant before it reaches your home. Refrigerator filters are designed to handle what remains after that treatment — chlorine, lead, cysts, and taste/odor compounds.

Installation & Replacement

7 Questions

How do I install a new refrigerator water filter?

+

The exact steps depend on where your filter is located — but here’s the universal process:

  1. Locate the filter housing — inside the fridge (upper corner), in the bottom grille, or inside the freezer compartment
  2. Turn off the ice maker if your fridge has one
  3. Remove the old filter — either twist counterclockwise (most inline/push-in) or press the eject button (push-in cap type)
  4. Remove the plastic cap from the new filter if present
  5. Insert the new filter — align it with the housing and turn clockwise until it locks, or push in until it clicks
  6. Run 2–3 gallons of water through the dispenser to flush the filter before drinking
  7. Reset the filter indicator light — see the next FAQ for how

See our full step-by-step replacement guide with photos for every brand.

How do I reset the water filter light after replacing the filter?

+

The reset method varies by brand. Here are the most common:

  • LG: Press and hold the “Water Filter” button for 3–5 seconds
  • Samsung: Press and hold “Ice Type” or “Child Lock” for 3 seconds (varies by model)
  • Whirlpool/KitchenAid: Press and hold “Filter Reset” or “Water Filter” for 3 seconds
  • GE: Press and hold “Reset Water Filter” button for 3 seconds
  • Kenmore: Hold the “Water Filter Reset” button for 3–5 seconds

See our detailed guide: How to Reset the Filter Light on Any Refrigerator.

Do I need to flush the new filter before using it?

+

Yes — always flush a new filter before drinking the water. This is important for both OEM and compatible filters. Here’s why:

New filters contain activated carbon particles. The first water that passes through may be gray or slightly cloudy — this is harmless carbon dust, not a defect. Flushing removes it before you drink.

How much to flush: Run at least 2–3 gallons (about 5–7 minutes of continuous flow) through the dispenser and discard it. After that, your water will be crystal clear and ready to drink.

💡 Tip: Use the flushed water to water your plants — don’t waste it down the drain.

The filter feels loose or leaks after installation — what do I do?

+

A loose or leaking filter is almost always a seating issue, not a defect. Try these steps:

  • Remove the filter completely and re-insert it — make sure it’s aligned with the housing track before turning
  • Turn or push until you feel/hear a firm click or stop — a half-turn is rarely enough
  • Check that no plastic protective cap was left on the O-ring end of the filter
  • Inspect the housing for debris and clean it before re-inserting

If it continues to leak after 2–3 reinstall attempts, contact our support team. We’ll troubleshoot with you and send a replacement if needed.

Do I need to turn off my water supply to change the filter?

+

No — for the vast majority of refrigerators with internal water filters, you don’t need to shut off the water supply. The filter housing contains an automatic shut-off valve that stops water flow when you remove the filter.

You may see a small amount of water drip when removing the filter — have a small towel handy. But you will not get a significant water flow or need to turn anything off.

Exception: Inline filters (external filters installed in the water line behind the fridge) may require you to shut off the water supply. These are less common and usually found on older models.

My filter won’t come out — it’s stuck. What do I do?

+

A stuck filter is usually caused by mineral buildup or the filter swelling slightly after extended use. Try these approaches:

  • Twist-type filters: Apply firm, steady counterclockwise pressure. Don’t jerk — sustained pressure works better
  • Push-in cap type: Press the eject button fully before pulling — the button must be fully depressed
  • Wrap with a rubber grip mat (like a jar opener) for extra torque
  • If still stuck: Turn off your ice maker, place a towel down, and try again with slow steady pressure. Do not force it abruptly.

See our full troubleshooting guide: Refrigerator Filter Problems & Fixes.

Can I run my refrigerator without a water filter?

+

Yes, but with conditions. Most refrigerators allow you to insert a bypass plug (sometimes called a filter bypass) in place of the filter. This allows the water dispenser and ice maker to operate without filtration.

Running without a filter means your water and ice will be unfiltered — the quality depends entirely on your local municipal supply. For short periods (e.g., while waiting for a replacement to arrive), this is generally fine. Long-term use without a filter is not recommended for drinking water.

Many refrigerators come with a bypass plug — check your owner’s manual or ask us if yours is compatible with one.

Water Quality

6 Questions

What does a refrigerator water filter actually remove?

+

A certified refrigerator water filter (NSF 42 + 53) typically reduces:

  • Chlorine and chloramine — the primary disinfectants used in municipal water (NSF 42)
  • Lead — from old pipes and plumbing fixtures (NSF 53)
  • Cysts — Cryptosporidium and Giardia parasites (NSF 53)
  • VOCs — volatile organic compounds including some pesticides and industrial chemicals (NSF 53)
  • Bad taste and odor — from chlorine and other compounds (NSF 42)
  • Sediment particles — general particulate matter

Read our complete breakdown: What Does a Refrigerator Water Filter Actually Remove?

Why does my fridge water still taste funny after installing a new filter?

+

A few possible explanations:

  • Not flushed enough — run 2–3 more gallons through to flush residual carbon particles
  • Old ice in the ice maker — discard the first few batches of ice after a filter change
  • Filter not fully seated — a partially inserted filter can allow unfiltered water to bypass it
  • Water line or reservoir odor — if the fridge has been off or the water unused for long, flush generously

If taste issues persist after full flushing, contact our support team and we’ll help diagnose it.

Does my refrigerator filter remove lead from water?

+

Yes — if the filter is NSF/ANSI 53 certified for lead reduction, then yes. This is one of the most important functions a refrigerator filter performs, particularly in homes with older plumbing systems.

All filters sold at SwapMyFilter carry NSF 53 certification, which includes verified lead reduction. The exact reduction percentage is listed on each product page. Most certified filters reduce lead by 99%+.

See our detailed guide: Does a Refrigerator Filter Remove Lead?

Is refrigerator filtered water safe for infants and pregnant women?

+

Refrigerator filtered water (from NSF 42 and 53 certified filters) is significantly safer than unfiltered tap water for vulnerable populations, as lead and cyst reduction are critical concerns for infants and pregnant women.

However, for formula preparation for very young infants or high-risk pregnancies, many pediatricians recommend using certified filtered water or boiled water as an additional precaution. We always recommend following your pediatrician’s guidance for infants under 12 months.

For general drinking purposes, our filtered water is safe and cleaner than unfiltered alternatives.

Why does my fridge water smell like chlorine even with a new filter?

+

A few reasons this can happen:

  • High municipal chlorine levels — if your local water supply is using elevated chlorine temporarily (common in summer), the filter may not reduce 100% under those extreme conditions. It’s reducing it significantly, but not eliminating it entirely.
  • Filter not properly flushed — run an additional gallon through the dispenser
  • Water sitting in the reservoir — run the dispenser for 30 seconds before filling a glass if the fridge hasn’t dispensed water in a while

Full guide: Why Your Fridge Water Tastes Like Chlorine.

Can I use refrigerator filtered water for cooking?

+

Absolutely — and we encourage it. Filtered water improves the taste of coffee, tea, soups, pasta water, and anything else where water quality affects flavor. The chlorine reduction alone makes a noticeable difference in coffee and tea.

Since your refrigerator dispenser flows at about 0.5–1 gallon per minute, filling large cooking pots may take a minute or two — but the quality improvement is worth it for most dishes.

📅

When to Replace Your Filter

5 Questions

How often should I replace my refrigerator water filter?

+

The standard recommendation is every 6 months or 200 gallons, whichever comes first. This applies to both OEM and compatible filters.

However, your actual schedule may need to be adjusted based on:

  • Household size — a family of 5 consuming dispenser water daily may need to swap every 4–5 months
  • Water quality — homes with hard water, well water, or high sediment may exhaust filters faster
  • Usage patterns — if you rarely use the dispenser, your filter may last a full year before the media is exhausted

Full guide: How Often Should You Really Change Your Filter?

What are the signs that my filter needs replacing?

+

Beyond the 6-month clock, watch for these signs:

  • Chlorine taste or odor returns to the water — the carbon is saturated
  • Water flow slows noticeably from the dispenser — sediment is clogging the filter
  • Ice tastes or smells off — same filter serves both dispenser and ice maker
  • Filter indicator light turns red or orange — follow this signal
  • Water appears slightly cloudy — filter media may be breaking down

Full guide: How to Tell If Your Filter Needs Replacing.

Is it harmful to leave an expired filter installed?

+

Yes — leaving a filter in place well past its rated life can actually make your water worse than unfiltered water. Here’s why:

When the activated carbon is saturated, it can no longer absorb contaminants. Worse, the carbon media can become a surface for bacterial growth if it hasn’t been used in a while with a depleted filter. Contaminants it previously captured may also “backflush” into your water.

Swap it on schedule. Setting a 6-month calendar reminder takes 30 seconds.

Can I sign up for automatic filter reminders?

+

Yes — and we strongly encourage it. Join our email list and we’ll send you a personalized replacement reminder 6 months after your order — so you never forget. You’ll also receive a subscriber discount on your replacement order.

Sign up on our homepage or at checkout. You can set your reminder preference in your account settings. We’ll never spam you — just the one filter reminder when it matters.

Should I replace the filter when I move into a new home?

+

Absolutely yes — this is one of the most important filter replacements you’ll ever make. You have no idea how long the previous filter has been installed or what water quality it was exposed to. A saturated or expired filter offers no protection.

When moving into a new home, replacing the refrigerator water filter should be on your first-week checklist alongside changing the door locks and testing smoke detectors.

💡 Tip: Use the compatibility checker with the fridge’s model number to find the right replacement quickly.
